Edgar Degas's 1879 painting, "Portrait of Edmond Duranty",

“In reading, friendship is restored immediately to its original purity. With books there is no forced sociability. If we pass the evening with those friends—books—it’s because we really want to. When we leave them, we do so with regret and, when we have left them, there are none of those thoughts that spoil friendship: “What did they think of us?”—“Did we make a mistake and say something tactless?”—“Did they like us?”—nor is there the anxiety of being forgotten because of displacement by someone else. All such agitating thoughts expire as we enter the pure and calm friendship of reading.”

My first book site started in the late 1990’s, which I uploaded to the internet on the Simple Text application from my Mac Performa 595.

The official domain, booklist.org was created in 2002.

The internet has changed dramatically from the turn of this century. Incredible bandwidth. In the mid 1990’s the fastest dial up modem speed was 56Kbps. My current download speed is about 220 mbps. 1 Mbps is 1000 times faster than 1 Kbps!

I recently moved my site to Squarespace for a new look. Enjoy my new design, and be sure to subscribe to my newsletter,
